Protect Your Personal Data with BitLocker Device Encryption

You can take your laptop with you along with your personal data that you might want to keep private. Therefore, you would like to protect it from unauthorized access. So, let’s say that bad guys stole your laptop. Now, they can take out the hard drive, plug it into a hard drive reader, and see all your data.

What is BitLocker?

Microsoft thought of similar scenarios and provided the BitLocker as an option of data protection for its users. The software encrypts your data, which can only be decrypted using the key that it generates. Even if bad guys take out the hard drive from your laptop and try to read it, they won’t be able to do it without the encryption key.
Keep in mind that the only user accounts with administrator privileges can enable this feature. So, if you have several user accounts on your laptop, make sure that admin accounts are password protected.

If you decide to use this software, remember that there are no back doors to regain access to your data. Therefore, you would have to save that key into a safe place. If you lose the encryption key, you won’t be able to recover your data.

Which operating systems have BitLocker?

Among the latest, Windows 8, 8.1 Pro, 10 Pro, and 10 Enterprise have this feature. What’s the primary reason for Home versions not having it? Home version assumes that the laptop will be used at home, and user accounts with restrictions and permissions solve the basic privacy concerns. On top of that nobody at home will pull apart the laptop and take out the hard drive to read a family member’s data.

The abovementioned Windows versions are more likely to be used in the business world, where other people might access users’ computers. Therefore, to protect those customers, Microsoft included the BitLocker only in those versions of its operating systems.
