Mobile phones are expensive these days, and they are a status symbol for some people. Nobody wants to have n 800$ phone with a big scratch on their screen by just being careless about it. If you somehow scratched the screen of your previous phone, you’d want to avoid that from that point on. So, using a mobile screen protector is always a good idea. A screen protector is an additional safety commonly made of polyurethane or glass that can be placed on top of any smartphone’s screen to protect it against physical damage or scratches. So, is installing a screen protector worth it? Let’s find out.
1. Do you really need a screen protector for your mobile phone?
People purchase screen protectors to protect their screens from scratches and minor drops. Most modern devices use Corning’s Gorilla Glass or similar built-in screen protection. Gorilla Glass is a toughened, rigid, scratch-resistant glass that protects your phone to some degree. However, we still recommended using a screen protector for a couple of reasons.
1a. Protection from drops
Screen protectors work like a bike helmet: they will absorb the shock from an impact, but they don’t protect against everything. If you drop your phone on a sharp object, it could damage both your screen protector and your device’s screen. In case of an accidental drop, your screen protector could save you from paying for a screen replacement. That’s why buying a screen protector is worth the hassle. However, your phone is better protected with a screen protector on it because it will take the damage first. Why you shouldn’t rely solely on Gorilla Glass? In a bike crash, one’s bones will protect him/her organs, but the person will be more protected with a bike helmet and knee pads.
1b. Protection from scratches
Your phone will get small scratches if you use it daily. If your phone is in your pocket with your keys, charger, coins, and jewelry, its screen can get scratched. It is less likely to happen while using a screen protector: your phone will have no scratches which allows you to resell it later on. If you had a screen protector on your phone, you can easily replace the protector in 10-15 dollars, which is significantly cheaper than replacing a screen.
So, using a screen protector would add an extra layer of security for your device screen. And in it would help avoid expensive screen repairs or a scratched touch screen.
2. Differences Between Plastic and Glass Protector
Some protectors are made of a thin layer of plastic or foil while others are made from real glass that went through a special tempering process that strengthens it. Plastic screen protectors are less expensive and thinner than tempered glass: around 0.1 mm thick, compared to 0.3-0.5 mm for glass.
2a. Price Difference
Glass protection is slightly pricier than plastic ones. Tempered Glass protectors are available at a $5-35 price range. You will pay somewhere around $10 for a single plastic protector or a pack of 3 depending on the quality. The difference in price depends on the quality of the material and technologies applied to it, such as an oleophobic coating, which reduces fingerprints and smudges.
Tempered glass is almost harder and more rigid than plastic at a similar price range. Unlike the glass protectors, cheap plastic protectors easily get scratched. You can feel the difference by gliding your fingers on a plastic protector and a naked glass screen of your mobile phone. Tempered glass protectors are smooth and almost feels like the original screen.
Because of their thickness, glass protectors will bulge out a bit more than the plastic screen protector. The protector is slightly raised from the edges of the phone, which can be an aesthetic issue for some people. This also means your Home button is recessed more than you are used to on iPhone especially. Even though 0.5mm seems like a small difference, you will feel the difference when using your phone.
The installation of a plastic screen protector is a bit more complex because there are small chances that you may leave some bubbles on the screen. Plastic protectors are very thin and you need some skills to flawlessly install them on your phone. On the other hand, glass protectors are easier to install compared to plastic protectors. Remember that in both cases you have to clean the screen before the installation.
Which one you should choose?
Our answer is yes, buying and installing a screen protector is worth it. Now, the question is “Which protector you should go with? Plastic or tempered glass?” The plastic screen protectors are cheaper, lighter but also provide less protection compared to a slightly pricier, thicker glass protectors. The feel of a glass protector is somehow closer to the original mobile phone screen which feels great. Therefore, we suggest going with the tempered glass protectors.
